About

Part of Celebrate Mexico 2010

"Not only visually arresting but unabashedly sensual, subliminally erotic, and achingly human"
--The Boston Globe

"The intelligence, the power, and the beauty of her work…make a profound, lasting impression."
--Ballet Magazine

Founded in 1994, Mexico's Tania Pérez-Salas Compañia de Danza is renowned for its "imaginative, extravagant theatricality" (The Boston Globe). Unparalleled in the world of Mexican contemporary dance, Tania Pérez-Salas's rich, theatrical imagination creates a magical place and arresting sights. Her choreography draws from her passion for literature and her musical choices range from Bach to rock. But the most stunning element of her work is her haunting visual imagery, which includes dreamlike video projections, extravagant props, and dramatic lighting. Her dancers are technically adept and full of emotional resonance that permeates her work.

In celebration of Mexico's 200th Anniversary, the company returns for the first time since its successful Kennedy Center debut in January 2008. Choreographed in 2002, 3.Fourteen Sixteen is a work Pérez-Salas says was "spawned from my gut. Nothing was planned, and yet, it all seemed to fit within a circular arc." A stark, beautiful dance, Waters of Forgetfulness is performed on a stage filled with water. The lighting and music combine for a magical effect and unforgettably beautiful images. EX-STASIS is a new work for eight dancers set to music by Pan Sonic, Chris Isaak, and Swayzak y Alva Noto Transspray.
