For the duration of Nordic Cool 2013, the Terrace Gallery will become the Cool Club, an extension of the Nordic Design Illustrated exhibition. The Cool Club will feature the iconic Arne Jacobsen Series 7 chairs, on loan from Fritz Hansen, the Embassy of Denmark in Washington, D.C., and Furniture from Scandinavia, and a new curtain made from fabric by Marimekko.
Born in Sweden but a Dane since 1983, vocalist and actress Caroline Henderson's joie de vivre, passion, and uncompromising attitude have always been the driving forces behind her career, making her one of the most interesting and sought-after singers of our time--a true diva of jazz. Her 2011 box set Jazz Collection included six of her solo recordings, among them her acclaimed Danish Music Award–winning Best Vocal Recording Love or Nothin'. For the past five years, Henderson has also been a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF.
Pianist Nikolaj Hess has released numerous albums as a band leader/composer/producer and can be heard on more than 100 recordings, his latest albums being Trio with Kenny Wollesen & Tony Scherr, and Global Motion with Jeff Ballard, Ben Monder, Marc Mommaas, John Hebert, and Tony Moreno. Hess has made music for and played in Lars von Trier's film Melancholia and for German director Juliane Fezer's Meeres Stille. He has played and recorded with a long list of international jazz legends, among others Lee Konitz, Benny Golson, Global Motion, Fela Kuti, Caroline Henderson, Chris Cheek, Chi McBride, Greg Hutchinson, Ambrose Akinmusire, Jean-Luc Ponty, Hal Willner, Dennis Charles, Sissel Vera Pettersen, and many others. Hess won the RAI competition for best European jazz piano player under 25, and gold in Berlingske Tidendes Rhythmic Music Competition, and has received numerous grants from the Danish Art Council and a long list of foundations. Nikolaj Hess divides his time between Denmark and New York, where he is very active on the international jazz scene.
