At the 5th annual Ed Games Expo, attendees can demo more than 100 learning games and technologies for students age 5 to 18. The Expo is free and open to the public.

Game-based learning is gaining popularity as more young people and adults learn from games, both in and out of the classroom. Well-designed games can motivate learners to actively engage in challenging tasks, master content, and sharpen critical thinking and problem solving skills. The widespread availability of mobile hand-held and tablet devices enables game-playing anywhere, anytime and has provided expanded opportunities for game developers. In addition, emerging forms of technology such as Virtual Worlds, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and 3D Printing, provide new immersive and hands-on experiences to enrich learning.

The ED Games Expo is an annual showcase event for the field of learning and technologies. At the Expo attendees can demo more than 100 learning games and technologies for students age 5 to 18, while meeting and interacting with more than 70 developers and researchers. Most of the games at the Expo were developed across 14 different government agencies and programs, including through the Small Business Innovation Research programs at the Department of Education, the National Science Foundation, the Department of Agriculture, and the National Institutes for Health, as well as through other programs at ED/IES, ED/OCTAE, ED/OSEP, NIH, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Smithsonian, the Library of Congress, USAID, the Wilson Center, and the Environmental Protection Agency. The Expo is free and open to the public.

The ED Games Expo has three goals: (1) to demonstrate the impact of government programs that invest in emerging forms of games and technologies to enrich student learning, (2) to build capacity for the field of learning games and technologies by connecting developers to key stakeholders, and (3) to provide children and students a rich experience where they can try out cutting edge technologies, talk to the entrepreneurs and researchers to learn the backstories, and have the opportunity to ask what they can do to become game and technology developers.
