About

Yosvany Terry “is an especially dynamic presence. The cross-cultural truth behind Afro-Latin jazz is not news… yet Mr. Terry expresses it in novel and urgent ways.”—The Wall Street Journal

Yosvany Terry Afro-Cuban Sextet

Born into an illustrious musical family in Camaguey, Cuba, Yosvany Terry is an internationally acclaimed saxophonist, percussionist, and cultural bearer of the Afro-Cuban tradition. While best known as a blazing improviser, he is rapidly gaining renown as a composer, bandleader, and educator with a string of high-profile awards, appointments, and commissions. He plays his original compositions, blending exquisite post-bebop and ceremonial music with rhythms and chants from Cuba and West Africa.

For Artes de Cuba, the Terrace Gallery transforms into the Cubano Club:

For Artes de Cuba, the Kennedy Center’s Terrace Gallery transforms into the Cubano Club. As one of two installations he’ll create for the festival, Cuban visual artist Roberto Diago will design a striking façade for the Cubano Club using wood and other materials to embody the spirit of jazz, Afro-Cuban culture, and the vibrant network between Cuban and American artists. Audiences can enjoy performances and cocktail tastings in this evocative space, surrounded by photos of Cuban and American musicians that capture all the color, sounds, and vitality they brought from Cuba to the U.S. (and vice versa) through their art.

Hang around for late-night fun with “Noches Cubanas”!

Every Thursday and Friday during Artes de Cuba from 9:30 p.m. to midnight, head to the Atrium after your evening show to enjoy spontaneous, free live entertainment with one or more of the artists featured during the festival! Purchase a cocktail at the Atrium bar, explore the visual art installations, and mingle with some of our very special guests in this exciting late-night lounge atmosphere. Please note capacity in the Atrium is limited each evening, so be sure to make your way to the Roof Terrace Level as early as you can.

NOTE: Yosvany Terry will sign CDs following the 7 and 9 p.m. performances, in the States Gallery outside of the Cubano Club (KC Jazz Club).
