Cuban percussionist, two-time Grammy® nominee, and 2011 MacArthur Fellow Dafnis Prieto’s revolutionary drumming techniques and compositions are infusing Latin jazz with a bold new energy and sound. He transposes elements from his Afro-Cuban musical heritage incorporating congas, timbales, and the layered rhythmic patterns of rumba and son. The members of his Sí o Sí (“Yes or Yes”) Quartet are all among the most in-demand players in New York’s vibrant jazz and Latin jazz scenes. Tapping its profound fluency in folkloric Cuban idioms and taking daring plunges into modern jazz harmonies and improvisation, the Sí o Sí Quartet enthralls audiences hungry for music at once familiar and new.

For Artes de Cuba, the Terrace Gallery transforms into the Cubano Club:

For Artes de Cuba, the Kennedy Center’s Terrace Gallery transforms into the Cubano Club. As one of two installations he’ll create for the festival, Cuban visual artist Roberto Diago will design a striking façade for the Cubano Club using wood and other materials to embody the spirit of jazz, Afro-Cuban culture, and the vibrant network between Cuban and American artists. Audiences can enjoy performances and cocktail tastings in this evocative space, surrounded by photos of Cuban and American musicians that capture all the color, sounds, and vitality they brought from Cuba to the U.S. (and vice versa) through their art.
