Evoking vintage black-and-white screen sirens like Marlene Dietrich, Tokyo-born singer/dancer/actor Mari Natsuki has twice been nominated for a Japanese Academy Award, has starred as the mother in the TV remake of Bewitched in Tokyo, and provided the voice of Yubaba the Witch in Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away, the first anime film to win an Oscar.
At the Kennedy Center, she performs the Washington premiere of her acclaimed self-produced theater piece, which The Scotsman says uses "her considerable talents… to extraordinary effect." Currently in its eighth version, Natsuki approaches the work from a different perspective in each re-creation, in order to have a deeper understanding of words, body, and space.
