Project Bandaloop: Bound(less)
San Francisco's Project Bandaloop presents Bound(less), a large-scale vertical dance that explores how we imagine and construct the meaning of our identity as it is forged through human interactions and interactions with our environment. Performed with live music by Dana Leong, Bound(less) looks at one's internal and collaborative sense of self through moments that reveal vulnerability and longing and group choreography that brings to life the tensions and power of communal action. Physical metaphors, including a single dress worn by three women and a tethered group dance, are woven with intimate moments of movement and text into a dynamic aerial work. Originally commissioned by the Segerstrom Performing Arts Center in Orange County, Bound(less) has had a rich touring life, performed to awestruck audiences on the Great Wall of Oakland, the Alys Robinson Stephens Performing Arts Center in Birmingham, and on the Frank Gehry–designed New World Center in Miami. Already, upwards of 35,000 people have seen this new Project Bandaloop creation.
The Old Post Office walls facing Pennsylvania Ave. afford a spectacular array of Project Bandaloop vertical dance opportunities. Revealed from inside the main clock tower face, dancers appear on ledges and interact with the detailed architecture of this historic building. Drawing from 20 years of experience making site-reactive dance, Project Bandaloop activates and engages the architecture of the Old Post Office. This marriage of architectural lighting, elegant and sophisticated choreography, and evocative music by Dana Leong brings this historic public space to life and leaves a lasting impression on the community who share in the performance.
For this performance, a reclining chair or mat to lie down on is recommended.
