The Kennedy Center's Lunar New Year Celebration--for 2017, ringing in the Year of the Rooster--culminates with one of China's most internationally acclaimed orchestras. This fascinating program features Chinese orchestral works plus a special orchestration of Mahler's Song of the Earth to include traditional Chinese instruments.

The Kennedy Center's 2017 Lunar New Year Celebration culminates with one of China's most internationally acclaimed orchestras in a fascinating program led by Muhai Tang--the only Chinese conductor to have won a Grammy Award. The program includes:

  • Gustav Mahler's The Song of the Earth in a special U.S. premiere orchestration to include traditional Chinese instruments featuring two world-renowned soloists: tenor Kang Wang (winner of the Dame Joan Sutherland People's Choice Award) and mezzo-soprano Huiling Zhu (winner of the Elisa-Meyer Vocal Competition) 
  • A Kennedy Center commission from "one of the world's leading young composers" (The New Yorker), Huang Ruo, entitled Wind Blows... (New Version for Oboe and Orchestra) and featuring Liang Wang, principal oboe for the New York Philharmonic and 2014 Beijing International Music Festival Artist of the Year.
  • Eloignement, an evocative orchestral work by Grand Prix de la Musique Symphonique Award winner Qigang Chen
  • Imperial Concubine in Tang Dynasty: Ode to Pear Blossom, a Beijing Opera excerpt featuring Xinyue Zhang, one of the art form's most acclaimed performers and the recipient of the Plum Blossom Prize, China's highest award for theatrical performers
Plus, as a special treat, 50 lucky attendees will receive a special Chinese "red envelope" gift, a cultural symbol of good luck and well wishes for the coming year!

Lunar New Year at the Kennedy Center is presented by the office of International Programming with the support of the Embassy of China.
