For more than 50 years, Paul Taylor's legendary dance genius has been a testament to the American experience. Dubbed the "naughty boy" of dance by his former teacher Martha Graham, the 1992 Kennedy Center Honoree doesn't shy away from controversial topics for his dances. Few artists of our time have had a more profound impact on their art form than Taylor.
 
Paul Taylor Dance Company returns for the first time since its successful December 2006 engagement to perform three new works as part of Modern Masters, the Center's celebration of American modern dance.
 
De Sueños (of dreams) and its companion piece De Sueños que se Repiten (of recurring dreams), are surrealistic dreamscapes--set to the Kronos Quartet's recording of Latin American music and soundscapes--that conjure up the culture and folklore of Mexico. Featuring sets and costumes by Santo Loquasto and lighting by Jennifer Tipton, the New York Times described the pieces as "among Mr. Taylor's trickiest and most visually sumptuous."
 
One of Taylor's newest works, Beloved Renegade is a spiritual dance inspired by the life and work of Walt Whitman and set to Poulenc's Gloria. Alastair Macaulay of the New York Times called it "the best new choreography I saw in 2008."
