About the Program

According to NEA Jazz Master Hank Jones, "when you listen to a pianist, each note should have a soul of its own." For more than six decades, Jones has taken his words to heart, always playing with a deeply personal style. "A great, ageless pianist who's among the last links to the lost world of Manhattan's 52nd Street" (The New York Times), he brings his quartet featuring Italian vocalist Roberta Gambarini, who demonstrated a "remarkable range and a great flair for scatting" (The Washington Post) at James Moody's 80th birthday celebration in 2005. Jones's quartet will be joined by two other NEA Jazz Masters: saxophonist/clarinetist Paquito D'Rivera and trumpeter/flugelhornist Clark Terry. Part of Jazz in Our Time.

Hank Jones is unable to appear due to illness, and Clark Terry is unable to appear due to a
schedule conflict.

Roberta Gambarini and Paquito D'Rivera will be joined by Frank Wess, flute and saxophone,
George Mraz, bass, and Jimmy Cobb, drums.
