About the Program

Over the past three decades, nine-time Grammy winner Janis Siegel has been an undeniable vocal force in The Manhattan Transfer and through her own solo career. At the 2004 Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival, the Washington Post hailed her for her "extraordinary vocal gifts." As part of the citywide Duke Ellington celebration, Janis Siegel performs songs made famous by the Duke plus selections from her latest CD, A Thousand Beautiful Things. The recording was culled from a wide cross-section of songwriters--Björk, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Annie Lennox, Fred Hersch, and Suzanne Vega among them--and interpreted through a predominantly Latin lens.
