About the Program

A recipient of the 2005 Mellon Living Jazz Legacy Award, Rufus Reid is one of today's premier bassists. His playing encompasses eloquent renditions of often-overlooked jazz standards as well as exciting original compositions. Combining three generations of styles and experiences, Rufus Reid's repertoire ranges from infectious hard-swinging bebop to lush, sensuous ballads. In a program that includes music from his multi-part composition, Linear Surroundings commissioned by Chamber Music America, Rufus Reid "plays with a degree of subtlety and tonal polish one rarely encounters in improvised music" (The Chicago Tribune).
