About the Program
"Remains the standard by which all other quartets must be judged"--Los Angeles Times
In the 60 years of its existence, the ever-evolving institution that is the Juilliard String Quartet has become a living American legend. From the beginning, they've been recognized for the boldness of their interpretations of the classics, with an equal and parallel tradition of championing the new. For more than four decades, they were the Quartet-in-Residence at the Library of Congress, making them the "First Family" of chamber music in the United States. In its first-ever Fortas concert, the Juilliard performs Mendelssohn's masterful Quartet in D major, Dutilleux's Ainsi la Nuit--which was given its U.S. premiere by the group in 1978--and Ravel's Quartet in F major, the composer's only one in the genre and one of the most popular.
