About the Program
About the Program
Playing together for more than 20 years, drummer Carl Allen and bassist Rodney Whitaker "present straightahead jazz with a great deal of composure…sharp, snappy, and expressive" (DownBeat). The new Artistic Director of Jazz Studies at The Juilliard School, Allen is a "force in today's jazz world" (JazzTimes) and was last heard at the Center in the January 2009 salute to Benny Golson. Currently the Director of Jazz Studies at Michigan State University, Whitaker has been praised for "impressive" (JazzTimes) bass playing and walking style. Together, they present music from their new release, Work to Do (Mack Avenue), which joins past with present, paying respect to masters of the soul jazz, R&B, and mainstream jazz idioms. All events and artists subject to change without prior notice.
