From comedies and dramas to musical theater and movies, Terrence McNally has secured his place among the great modern playwrights. McNally has earned four Tony Awards (Ragtime, Master Class, Love! Valour! Compassion!, Kiss of the Spider Woman) and written theater hits from Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune to The Full Monty. For the 2009–2010 Theater season, the Kennedy Center presents The Lisbon Traviata, Master Class, and Golden Age, a special collection of three McNally plays on one of his favorite subjects--the opera.

Produced through a grant from the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays, Terrence McNally's Golden Age comes to the Center fresh from its world premiere at Philadelphia Theatre Company. A tale of operatic intrigue, Golden Age takes place backstage at the Théâtre-Italien in Paris on the evening of the premiere of Vincenzo Bellini's I Puritani. Assembled are the composer, his faithful friend Francesco Florimo, and the four singers known the world over as The Puritani Quartet. Bellini thought this opera would cement his supremacy over his rival Gaetano Donizetti. It was to be his last.

The production features the ensemble cast of Rebecca Brooksher as Grisi, Jeffrey Carlson as Bellini, Roe Hartrampf as Florimo, Marc Kudisch as Tamburini, Hoon Lee as Lablache, Christopher Michael McFarland as Rubini, Dante Mignucci as Page, and Amanda Warren as Malibran.

Golden Age features set design by Santo Loquasto, costume design by Richard St. Clair, lighting design by Jason Lyons, and sound design by Ryan Rumery.
Theater at the Kennedy Center is presented with the generous support of Stephen and Christine Schwarzman.
