About the Program
WNO's 2007 spring season opens with a smashing new production of Die Walküre as part of thecompany's first Ring cycle. The second and most popular installment of Wagner's epic drama,
directed by Francesca Zambello (Porgy and Bess, Billy Budd), is a saga of forbidden love, heroism,
and the conflict between personal ambition and desire and the rule of law. Conducted by WNO's
music director Heinz Fricke, Die Walküre recounts the tragic love story of long-lost twins Siegmund
(Plácido Domingo) and Sieglinde (Anja Kampe), and how a daughter's defiance secures the future
of humanity but foretells the ultimate destruction of the gods. The critically-acclaimed cast of WNO's
2003 production returns, including Alan Held as the menacing Wotan, Linda Watson as the
warrior-maiden Brünnhilde, and Elena Zaremba and Elizabeth Bishop as Fricka.
Performed in German with English supertitles.
NOTE: Supertitles are not visible from Rear Orchestra seats.
