Biography of Heinz Fricke
About the Artist
Heinz Fricke became head of the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra at the beginning
of the 1993-94 season, and is responsible for its artistic quality. Maestro Fricke,
formerly music director of the Berlin Staatsoper, has conducted operas in cities
across Europe, including Berlin, Hamburg, Brussels, Munich, Düsseldorf, Cologne,
and Vienna. He has also conducted major symphony orchestras in virtually every
European country, and has made numerous recordings. Since Mr. Fricke’s appointment
at the Kennedy Center he has also conducted several productions of The Washington
Opera, including
Ariadne auf Naxos, Il Barbiere di Sivigili, Der Fliegende Holländer,
Le Nozze di Figaro, Der Rosenkavalier and
Tiefland.
