As Japan's most famous butoh company, Sankai Juku creates performances featuring breathtaking, large-scale staging. Founded by artistic director Ushio Amagatsu, the company has won countless awards, including the 2002 Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production in 2002.

For the festival, Sankai Juku revives the production that launched its prolific career in the United States. Filled with hypnotic imagery, the full-evening Kinkan Shonen ("Kumquat Seed") explores a young boy's dream of the origins of life and death. Time Magazine says the work has "the clear, smooth grace of a rock in a Japanese garden and the impact, simultaneously, of the same rock hurled."

"One of the most original and startling dance theater groups to be seen"
