2011 VSA Playwright Discovery Award Biography
Emily Hedgecock
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts' affiliate VSA, the international organization on arts and disability, is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2011 VSA Playwright Discovery Award, Handspeak by 18-year-old Emily Hedgecock, from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Inspired by a personal experience, the play is a story of two students, one who is deaf and one who is hearing, who seek mutual understanding.
Emily Hedgecock recently graduated from Edison Preparatory School in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she was involved in many extracurricular activities, including graphic novel club, academic team, and several community-based youth groups. An avid writer, Emily has written two novels, six plays, numerous short stories, and countless poems. She attends Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology, where she is majoring in culinary arts.
