About

The brightest dancers. The best training. The finest performances of original works. This was the dream of Lincoln Kirstein and George Balanchine when they set out to form a distinctively American company. After more than a decade of obstacles, including the Depression and the Second World War, their Ballet Society had its first performance in 1948 as the resident company at New York’s City Center. New York City Ballet—“one of the most important dance companies in the world” (The Washington Post)—was thus born. More than 55 years later, the company is renowned for preserving the classical ideals of harmony, purity, balance, and musicality. From Stravinsky and Chopin to Richard Rodgers, music remains the guiding force for every thrilling work created for its dancers. Following its triumphant 2004 return to the Kennedy Center after a 17-year absence, New York City Ballet with its own orchestra will present three mixed programs of more magnificent dance.

Balanchine classics include THE FOUR TEMPERAMENTS, a vibrant exploration of the body’s four humors; THEME AND VARIATIONS, featuring music from Tchaikovsky’s Suite No. 3; the patriotic STARS AND STRIPES, set to Sousa’s marches; and DIVERTIMENTO NO. 15, a showcase for 18th-century classicism and Mozart’s glorious score. Favorites from Jerome Robbins include I’M OLD FASHIONED, a Hollywood-style tribute to Fred Astaire that mixes live dancing and film; GLASS PIECES, a three-part work performed to music by Philip Glass; and WEST SIDE STORY SUITE, one of the rarest of ballets featuring dancers in dialogue and song. The company also performs Peter Martins’s THOU SWELL, in which glamorous couples dance the night away to Richard Rodgers’s music, and Christopher Wheeldon’s POLYPHONIA, a romantic work with comic twists set to piano works by Ligeti.
