An artistic legacy for more than 200 years, St. Petersburg's Kirov Ballet is "awesome in its perfection of style, its technical power and assurance, its unanimity of spirit, and in the majestic scale of it all" (The Washington Post). As part of its 2005-2006 engagement at the Kennedy Center, the Kirov Ballet presents a program of William Forsythe masterworks (June 13–15) as well as a production of Giselle (June 16–18).

WILLIAM FORSYTHE MASTERWORKS (JUNE 13-15)
William Forsythe's unique choreography both embraces and challenges the conventional ballet technique. Set to a fragmented recording of a Bach violin work, Steptext begins with the houselights up and the audience still conversing. Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude is performed by three women and two men to Schubert's Ninth Symphony. In the middle, somewhat elevated demands quicksilver movements from the dancers. And Approximate Sonata comprises a sequence of four duets. Through this stirring program, "it's not only clear that the Kirov can do Forsythe, but that the seriousness of their traditions are an advantage" (London's The Guardian).

GISELLE (JUNE 16-18)
The tale of Giselle follows the dashing prince Albrecht who, disguised as a commoner, vies for the affections of the lovely yet poor peasant girl, Giselle. When his true identity is revealed and it is discovered that he is betrothed to another, Giselle dies of a broken heart. Left to journey through the haunting underworld alone, she meets the Wilis, who are other lost souls, and begins to overcome her grief. Based on the joint choreography of famed ballet masters Jules Perrot and Jean Coralli, Giselle displays the "combination of athleticism with lyricism and artistry that makes this company great" (Time Magazine).
