One of the oldest and greatest ballet companies in the world, the Bolshoi Ballet returns following its successful February 2010 engagement of Spartacus, which the Washington Post praised for striking "an effective balance between juicy melodrama…and gold-standard ballet finesse to curl your toes."
Led by new Artistic Director Sergei Filin, one of the Bolshoi Ballet's former stars, Moscow's renowned Bolshoi Ballet performs the evening-length production of Petipa and Cecchetti's Coppélia, classical ballet's greatest comedy, a story of mistaken identity. The enigmatic Coppélia, believed to be the daughter of the reclusive toy-maker Coppélius, sits on her father's balcony, seemingly oblivious to the world around her. Her neighbor, the feisty Swanilda, is angered by Coppélia's aloof attitude, and becomes even more alarmed when her fiancé Franz begins to take more than a passing interest in the girl. When she breaks into Coppélius's house to confront her rival, she soon realizes that Coppélia is not quite what she seems.
