--The New York Times
Suzanne Farrell--George Balanchine's most celebrated muse--continues to share her intimate understanding of the late choreographer's vanguard body of work through the Kennedy Center's own ballet company. For its 13th season of performances, the company presents two mixed programs to include past audience favorites and new company premieres.
Among the ballets will be Episodes, Balanchine's homage to the music of Anton Webern that ends with the composer's tribute to J.S. Bach. Celebrating the 450th anniversary of the birth of William Shakespeare, the company will premiere Paul Mejia's Romeo and Juliet. The 25-minute ballet is set to a score from Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture. The company will also premiere Balanchine's 1955 Pas de Dix.
Mozartiana will return, Balanchine's last great masterpiece set to the music of Tchaikovsky. Ms. Farrell has said Mozartiana "changed my life more than any other ballet Balanchine made on me." With these momentous ballets in store, The Suzanne Farrell Ballet is "too distinctive, too juicy, too fabulously fearless to miss" (The Washington Post).
