"A grand-scale production, with loads to admire"
--The Spectator
"The Bolshoi's Giselle proves a thing of great beauty... a stirring tale indeed."
--The Telegraph
Since the beginning of the millennium, Bolshoi Ballet has performed to sold-out audiences with each visit to the Kennedy Center--thrilling fans with the likes of Romeo and Juliet, Swan Lake, La Bayadère, The Nutcracker, Cinderella, Don Quixote, Le Corsaire, and Spartacus. Most recently in 2012, the company's new staging of Coppélia garnered raves from the Washington Post, which praised the ballet as "an extraordinary achievement, full of color and life."
For the 2013–2014 season, the company presents Giselle, one of the most romantic and visually striking works in the classical canon. A simple peasant girl who loves to dance falls for a dashing prince in disguise. When she discovers his betrayal, her weak heart stops. In the ballet blanc second act, her ghost, along with a host of vengeful Wilis, haunts her beloved, ultimately transcending death with forgiveness. The legendary Bolshoi's Giselle is "tremendously atmospheric and blessed with terrific performances... a fine production with all the heartbreak and potent tragedy one could wish" (Daily Express).
