About
Masazumi Chaya, Associate Artistic Director
When Kennedy Center Honoree Alvin Ailey began creating dances nearly 50 years ago, he drew upon his "blood memories" of Texas, the blues, spirituals, and gospel as inspiration. From these rich influences came nearly 80 classic works, including Revelations, his "radiant and timeless" (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution) signature masterpiece. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has since become one of the most esteemed international ambassadors of American culture, whose "phenomenal popularity is unmatched by any other company in the world" (The New York Times).
Today, Alvin Ailey's legacy continues through the leadership of Artistic Director Judith Jamison, herself a Kennedy Center Honoree as well as an Emmy winner and National Medal of Arts recipient. During the company's annual engagement in February 2005, the Washington Post praised its "brilliant dancers, capable of infusing choreography… with humanity and virtuosity." Revelations will be among the company's week of mixed programs in 2006, which also promise a fascinating combination of audience favorites and new dances by some of today's most inventive choreographers.
