--The New York Times

Now celebrating its 26th anniversary, New York City–based Susan Marshall & Company blends virtuoso athleticism, ordinary movement, and gesture.  The Company has a long history of multidisciplinary collaboration, with more than 40 works made with musicians, visual artists, and designers. A recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship in 2000, Marshall has also received a Dance Magazine Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and was one of the first artists to receive an American Choreographer Award.

For the Company's Kennedy Center debut, it brings Play/Pause, a new full-evening work in which Susan Marshall embraces the collision of high art and pop culture, raiding and transforming popular dance forms and structures from the YouTube zeitgeist. She counterpoints the physical performance with projections of original online music videos. Set to a commissioned score by Pulitzer Prize–winning composer David Lang, performed live by the electric guitar quartet Dither, Marshall's latest work is the ultimate mash-up: postmodern dance theater meets indie rock on both real and virtual stages.
