One of the world's favorite dance companies, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater grew from a now-fabled performance in March 1958 at the 92nd Street Y in New York City. What makes this phenomenal company so special is the incomparable sense of joy, freedom, and spirit that the dancers and audiences share. Artistic Director Robert Battle, "who understands the limits of a company's past, even if that past is still popular beyond belief" (Time Out Chicago), is pushing boundaries by presenting new works from leading international choreographers in addition to Company favorites. The Ailey dancers return to the Center for their annual engagement of signature mixed repertory programs including Revelations, Alvin Ailey's enduring classic that has been seen by more audiences around the world than any other modern dance. "The crowd starts cheering before the curtain goes up" (The New York Times). This tribute to Ailey's African American heritage uses traditional spirituals to explore the places of deepest grief and holiest joy in the human soul.
