About

Hip-hop culture has influenced multiple generations of academics and educators since the culture emerged from the streets of New York City in the 1970s. Now a generation of hip-hop educators, scholars, and researchers are working to radically transform how young people learn and the very foundation of pedagogy itself. Join moderator Sam Seidel, educator and author of Hip Hop Genius: Remixing High School Education, and other leaders in the field--Columbia University's Dr. Christopher Emdin, author of Urban Science Education for the Hip-Hop Generation; community organizer, media producer, archivist, social entrepreneur, and NYU Adjunct Professor Martha Diaz; Youth Performance Coordinator at Rhode Island's AS220 community arts space Anjel Newmann; Science Genius B.A.T.T.L.E.S. winner Jabari Johnson; and Timothy Jones, Director of Education, Elementary to Career, at Martha's Table--as they discuss a hip-hop approach to learning and the potential benefits for the classroom and beyond.
