A hundred years ago, interest in ballet in Europe and America was reawakened from a deep sleep by the new ballets and fabulous dancing of Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. The dancers, including Vaslav Nijinsky and Tamara Karsavina, and choreographer Mikhail Fokine were all members of the Imperial Mariinsky Ballet. Had there been no Russian Revolution in 1917, the Ballets Russes works may have become the core of the Mariinsky repertory. Instead, the ballets were stranded in the West. In recent years, the Mariinsky has begun to dance these ballets which were an aesthetic revolution all their own. Will we see a new reawakening?
Performance Timing: 90 minutes, with no intermission.
NOTE: The Mariinsky Ballet does not participate in this session.
