About

Known for the “breadth and freedom of their art” (Newsday), critically acclaimed performance troupe Urban Bush Women collaborates with the National Company of Song and Dance of Mozambique to create a unique story of heroism co-commissioned by the Kennedy Center. A young girl moves with her parents from Mozambique to the rural Southeastern U.S., where she is teased for being “different.” Despite her isolation, she finds solace with the spirits of the night and ultimately becomes a town hero. Fusing live music and dance from Southeast Africa with richly layered narration and large-scale puppets and masks by Debbie Lee Cohen, Shadow’s Child addresses intolerance, embracing differences, and finding strength and a sense of self in difficult times.
