About
In this inspiring production, playwright Melinda Lopez (a
Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays award winner)
weaves together three stories of courage and compassion in the
face of illiteracy: the historical narratives of the great
orator Frederick Douglass; the true story of a teenage star
athlete who overcomes dyslexia; and the heartfelt struggles of
a contemporary immigrant family. Interlaced with humor and
humanity—and performed by both actors and puppets upon a giant
pop-up book set—How Do You Spell Hope? celebrates the power of
reading through “one of the best pieces of family theater in a
long time” (The Boston Herald).
