About
The world-renowned Kirov Opera led by Valery Gergiev returns
for the second of ten annual visits funded by Alberto Vilar
with two full-length operas by Tchaikovsky.
Eugene Onegin A young woman's infatuation meets an aristocrat's insensitivity in this retelling of one of literature's most passionate and poignant love stories. Based on Alexander Pushkin's narrative poem and set against the opulent backdrop of the Russian Empire, Tchaikovsky's dazzling opera tells the tale of Eugene Onegin, a dashing rogue who toys with the affections of Tatiana, a shy and impressionable country girl. Though Tatiana falls hopelessly under his spell, Onegin mercilessly rejects her, only to recognize his true feelings many years later. Onegin's dramatic declaration of devotion to Tatiananow married and a member of St. Petersburg's glittering social sceneultimately culminates in remorse, heartbreak, and love unfulfilled. The Guardian applauds this cherished opera filled with beautiful pastoral landscapes and spectacular ballroom scenes, where the Orchestra makes "every instrumental detail count" in Tchaikovsky's masterful score.
Sung in Russian with English surtitles.
