About
Named after the historically renowned string orchestra at the
court of French kings, this 16-member string ensemble from
Quebec City has become a pillar of the chamber music scene
across Canada, Europe, and the United States. Founded in 1984
by Bernard Labadie, one of Canada's most respected classical
musicians, Les Violons du Roy offers "thrillingly resonant
performances" (The Los Angeles Times) of the vast repertoire
for chamber orchestra. While the group's members employ modern
instruments, they use Baroque bows and bowing techniques to
reflect performance practices of the 17th and 18th centuries.
In 2001, the group received the JUNO Best Classical Album Award
for a recording of Handel's Apollo e Dafne. For its Kennedy
Center debut, Les Violons du Roy is joined by "enthralling"
(The Toronto Star) Canadian soprano Karina Gauvin for a concert
of Baroque arias and instrumental works by Handel and Bach.
