About

With an illustrious history of international success and extensive recording legacy, the Fine Arts Quartet has enjoyed an astonishing durability since its 1946 debut, performing for nearly 60 years with few changes in membership. Its current musicians are all artists-in-residence at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee: Ralph Evans, a prize winner in the International Tchaikovsky Competition; Efim Boico, former concertmaster of the Orchestre de Paris; Wolfgang Laufer, former principal cellist of the Hamburg Philharmonic; and Yuri Gandelsman, former principal violist of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. Together, they create "as fine a string quartet sound as can be heard from an American group today" (The San Francisco Chronicle). At the Kennedy Center, the foursome presents masterly string quartets by Beethoven and Antheil. Acclaimed pianist Yossi Kalichstein joins them for Robert Schumann’s Piano Quintet, a timeless favorite in chamber recitals all over the world. (Sara Wolfensohn has cancelled her appearance, for health reasons.)
