About

The Kirov Orchestra with singers of the Kirov Opera and dancers from the Kirov Ballet present this exhilarating event created exclusively for Kennedy Center audiences. The Washington Post called their last gathering in 2002 an “evening for which the Kennedy Center was invented...a stately, ambitious, multi-disciplinary festival of some of the highest of high arts.” Conductor Valery Gergiev opens this dazzling showcase of ballet and opera selections with the Overture to Glinka’s Ruslan and Lyudmila. Ballet offerings include ballerina Ulyana Lopatkina performing Fokine’s The Dying Swan and Daria Pavlenko in Balanchine’s La Valse, as well as the pas de deux from Petipa’s Le Corsaire and “Rubies” from Balanchine’s Jewels. Members of Kirov Opera will perform works by Tchaikovsky (the Ballroom Scene from Act 3 of Queen of Spades) and Rimsky-Korsakov (Act IV from Tsar’s Bride and the mesmerizing Merchant Scene from Sadko).
