Part of the Kennedy Center "250 Years of Mozart" celebration
Since their ensemble debut at President Carter's Inauguration, pianist Joseph Kalichstein, violinist Jaime Laredo, and cellist Sharon Robinson have been the reigning exemplar for the piano trio. "Evenly and expertly matched, [they] convey the sheer pleasure of making music so spontaneously. Individually and collectively, these musicians are special" (The Chicago Tribune). "Attuned to one another in countless, subtle ways" (The Boston Globe), the Kennedy Center Chamber Music Ensemble-in-Residence celebrates the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth and also marks Shostakovich's centenary in 2006. The performance includes Mozart's acclaimed Piano Trio in B-flat major and a transcription of an adagio from a Mozart Piano Sonata created for the players by Arvo Pärt. The concert is framed by Shostakovich's two piano trios--the First, a work that shows promise of his genius in his early years, and the Second, his stirring anthem against Soviet oppression near the end of World War II.
