About
The winner of two Grammy Awards for its recording of Dmitri Shostakovich's complete string quartets, the Emerson String Quartet is widely regarded as the premier interpreter of these works. Launching the new Fortas season, the group performs a special three-concert series to mark the 100th anniversary of Shostakovich's birth. Developed by NSO Conductor Laureate Mstislav Rostropovich in collaboration with Shostakovich, his close friend, this unique program will showcase eight of the late composer's masterful string quartets.
Perfectly suited for the intimacy of the Terrace Theater, these works act as the private diary of an artist who lived through years of struggle and cultural change, from the Stalinist era to the Cold War. In the words of Shostakovich himself: "In other countries, war probably interferes with the arts. But in Russia, they flowered." From the foreboding themes of Quartet No. 5, to the serene allure of Quartet No. 6, to the fiery outbursts in Quartet No. 8, these three concerts capture the signature beauty and emotion of Shostakovich's chamber compositions. On the third program, Fortas Artistic Director Joseph Kalichstein joins his friends for the impassioned Piano Quintet, which Shostakovich performed at its world premiere.
"The most exciting American string quartet of its generation" --The New York Times
"Rhythmic vigor and rich, polished tone" --The Washington Post
