More from the Dec. 8 Post review:

TCHAIKOVSKY'S SCORE IS "RAVISHING, WILDLY INVENTIVE"
"One of the jewels of 19th-century music-drama... Tchaikovsky at his most inspired! And nobody does it full justice quite like the Kirov."

VALERY GERGIEV IS "A MASTER"
"Is there any other conductor who can unleash the kind of maelstrom in the orchestra we heard here?
Gergiev coaxed his orchestra to playing of warmth, delicacy of phrasing, and sheer galvanic power."

VLADIMIR GALOUZINE IS A "TENOR PHENOMENON"
"A once-in-a-generation wonder... a dark-hued baritone that blossoms to a full-throated heldentenor on top. Thrilling!"

THE KIROV ORCHESTRA CREATES "A GORGEOUS STREAM OF SOUND"
"The musicians were the ultimate stars of this show, regularly taking one's breath away."

~~~~~~~
Also known as Pique Dame, this great Russian masterpiece made its debut at the Mariinsky Theatre in 1890. Composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky with a libretto by his brother Modest Tchaikovsky, the opera is based on the short story by Aleksandr Pushkin. Herman, an army officer, falls in love with Lisa, the granddaughter of the Countess. The Countess is said to know the "secret of the three cards," a winning hand at the game of Faro. Learning the secret through devious means ends up costing Herman his possessions, his lover, and ultimately his own life.
Sung in Russian with English supertitles
Kirov Opera also performs Otello (Dec. 9-16, 2007)
