About

KIROV OPERA's OTELLO
Valery Gergiev, General Director and Conductor

RAVES FOR THE NEW PRODUCTION:

FROM THE WASHINGTON POST (Dec. 11):

"Valery Gergiev is always exhilaratingly alive! He built Otello as one long, urgent impulse, from the volcanic reiterations of the opening chord through the radiant chamber music that accompanies Desdemona's prayer."

"I found myself listening with renewed excitement as though I were revisiting a favorite thriller, eager once more to find out what happened next."

FROM THE WASHINGTON TIMES (Dec. 11):

"Brilliant voices... visually arresting. Impressive!"

"The opera's book brilliantly captures the original's emotional highlights, enabling Verdi to create one of his most exciting scores, commencing with a pyrotechnical sea battle as the curtain rises."

"Stalwart tenor Vladimir Galouzine headlined the company's powerful cast as Otello, the brilliant, victorious Moorish general who is done in by his over-the-top jealousy... his immense vocal instrument possesses the clarion abilities of a world-class tenor united with the convincing heft of a baritone."

"Sergey Murzaev's voice [as Iago] was more than a match for Galouzine's in its distinctive strength - particularly evident in Iago's famous Act II aria, in which Murzaev chose to emphasize the descending, chromatic figures that lend a vicious edge to his evil credo."

"Once again, the Kirov Orchestra, under the baton of Valery Gergiev, performed at its symphonic best, imbuing this Italian opera with a majestic, almost Wagnerian sweep."

William Shakespeare's searing tale is taken to operatic proportions in the Kirov's brand-new production of Giuseppe Verdi's Otello by up-and-coming director Vasily Barkhatov. Otello, a Moorish general in the Venetian army, is successfully manipulated by Iago, a vengeful sailor he overlooked for promotion. Blinded by Iago's schemes, a jealous Otello questions the fidelity of his beloved wife Desdemona with tragic consequences.

Sung in Italian with English supertitles.

ACCLAIM FROM RUSSIA:

"A sublime psychological drama fused with suspense and delirious rage"

--The St. Petersburg Times

"Again Valery Gergiev has confirmed his reputation as one of the greatest Verdian conductors of the day."
--Vedomosti

"The whole performance hangs on the image of Otello, both brave and weak, brilliantly performed by Vladimir Galuzin. The other soloists were fine partners to Galuzin's expressive tenor and his exceptional acting skills."
--Nezavisimaya Gazeta

"The light and elegant voice of Vladimir Galuzin reigned on stage throughout the evening, and his acting skills may be admired even outside the framework of operatic conditions."
