About

Returning to the Kennedy Center in his Fortas debut after an appearance with the National Symphony Orchestra last season, Steven Isserlis performs cello sonatas by Britten and Rachmaninoff. Kirill Gerstein, winner of the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition, joins "the cello's best ambassador," (The Times, London) in celebrating Schumann's 200th birthday. Together they perform Isserlis's own transcription of the master composer's Violin Sonata No. 3, here interpreted by cello and piano. This fascinating and addictive music gives listeners a look into Schumann's final lucid period before the encroaching insanity that marked his last years of life. Part of the Kennedy Center's Focus on Russia.
