About

Berlin Nights/Paris Days: The Art of Chanson

The Vogler Quartet, one of Germany's preeminent string quartets, and internationally renowned cabaret artist Ute Lemper come together for a special project. Berlin and Paris of the 1920s was a melting pot of culture, as musical influences were converging from all over the world. This unique collaboration combines classical repertoire influenced by non-classical elements such as tango and jazz with popular songs of the time by Weimar composers, including Kurt Weill and Hanns Eisler. The program crosses countries and continents to hear chansons made famous by Edith Piaf as well as songs by Argentina's Astor Piazzolla, Israel's Chava Alberstein, and others. Brand new arrangements for Ms. Lemper and the Vogler with piano and clarinet are provided by multi-talented conductor/composer/performer Stefan Malzew, who also joins the artists as performer.

The Chicago Tribune says, "The world of cabaret can be divided into two distinct categories: Ute Lemper and everyone else," while the UK's The Guardian praises the Vogler Quartet as "belong[ing] in the highest category of contemporary string quartets."
