Winner of the 2011 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition Award, where he was judged by no less than Herbie Hancock, Jason Moran, and Ellis Marsalis, pianist Kris Bowers has already shown tremendous versatility at the tender age of 22, studying under Kenny Barron and Fred Hersch and performing on Jay-Z and Kanye West's Watch the Throne. Beloved by critics and notable figures alike, Bowers's "range and ambition…said something strong, sweet, and normative about phrasing and rhythm in jazz right now" (The New York Times).
