About

Hailed for their performance of Schubert's Winterreise in March 2012 as part of The Music of Budapest, Prague, and Vienna, baritone Matthias Goerne and pianist Christoph Eschenbach, Music Director for the Kennedy Center and National Symphony Orchestra, come together again to perform Schubert's vivid song cycle Die schöne Müllerin. Goerne and Eschenbach have been acclaimed internationally for their recordings of the Schubert song cycles including Die schöne Müllerin for the harmonia mundi label in 2009.

Schubert's song cycle on poems by Wilhelm Müller, Die schöne Müllerin (The Lovely Maid of the Mill), is one of his most important works and the 20 songs of this masterpiece move from cheerful optimism to despondency and tragedy. The Times of London says, "For Goerne and Eschenbach, Die schöne Müllerin is …an emotional journey recollected not in tranquility, but in a fierce, unquenchable anger from beyond the grave."

Performance Timing: Approximately 75 minutes, with no intermission.

PLEASE NOTE: There is no late seating and no intermission for this performance.
