About

Chilean saxophonist Melissa Aldana, winner of the 2013 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition and the first female instrumentalist to take first prize in the event's history, leads her own band in selections from her new self-titled Concord album. Recorded at Sear Sound Recording Studio in New York, the album consists of originals written by all three band members and includes two covers - the Harry Warren classic "You're My Everything" and Thelonious Monk's "Ask Me Now."

Aldana came to the U.S. in 2006 and graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2009. She's played with such greats as Joe Lovano, George Coleman, George Garzone, Greg Osby, and others. The New York Times praised her "great range of form and sound: controlled and loose, old and new, learned and intuitive…she wasn't just exhibiting her own voice but embodying it."

Listen to a feature on Melissa Aldana and Crash Trio's latest recording on NPR's All Things Considered.

Performance Timing: 75 minutes, with no intermission.
