About

Known for his distinctive sound and authentic instrumental prowess, saxophonist Craig Handy has played with formidable artists including master drummers Art Blakey and Roy Haynes, South African melodist Abdullah Ibrahim, and the Mingus Dynasty Band. One of his early fans was Bill Cosby, who invited him to be featured soloist in the theme for the sitcom The Cosby Show. He makes his Kennedy Center debut as leader with music from his recently released album on the OKeh label, Craig Handy & 2nd Line Smith, which reinterprets, in New Orleans style, ten numbers made famous by Jimmy Smith, the father of the modern jazz organ.
