About

For more than 30 years, the NSO Young Soloists' Competition has served the Metro DC region. Now, the competition is being expanded to a national scope. The annual top prize of $10,000 is being presented in memory of former NSO Music Director and Conductor Laureate Mstislav Rostropovich. Acclaimed conductor Christoph Eschenbach, whose exceptional artistry is matched by his generosity toward young artists, leads a special one-night-only benefit concert for the new competition on February 26 that features Erik Schumann, a remarkable violinist who he discovered. The program in the Concert Hall includes Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto and Brahms's First Symphony.

The 2008 Young Soloists' Competition National Young Artists Division is for strings--violin, viola, cello, and bass--and is open to students between the ages of 18 and 25 who are U.S. citizens. The first prize also includes the opportunity to perform with the NSO in the Concert Hall on May 20, 2008.
