About
Composer Olivier Messiaen chose Turangalîla--a fusing of the Sanskrit words for the movement of time and the songs of love--to title his symphonic exploration of romantic love and death, which the composer described as "superhuman, overflowing, dazzling, and abandoned." Christoph Eschenbach conducts the NSO in this astonishing 20th century classic featuring pianist Cédric Tiberghien and ondes martenot player Tristan Murail.
Each night, the first half of the program is an introduction to Messiaen and Turangalîla moderated by music scholar Joseph Horowitz and featuring Cédric Tiberghien, Tristan Murail, and Christoph Eschenbach. After intermission, the work is performed in its entirety.
AfterWords with Christoph Eschenbach, Cédric Tiberghien, Tristan Murail, and NSO Director of Artistic Planning Nigel Boon, following the concert on Friday evening, Mar. 11.
Program Note: There is no late seating until intermission.
