The National Symphony Orchestra celebrates the beginning of its 2011–2012 season with its annual Labor Day Capitol Concert featuring new NSO Principal Pops Conductor Steven Reineke in Legends of Washington Music, a musical tribute to John Philip Sousa, "Duke" Ellington, and Chuck Brown, the "Godfather of Go-Go."
The concert opens with music of John Philip Sousa, born in D.C. in 1854. The NSO performs works by the world-renowned "March King," including the "Circus Gallop" from The Irish Dragoon, the Presidential Polonaise, and several of his most popular marches.
"Duke" Ellington, born in D.C. in 1899, gave America its own distinctive sound that defined jazz for the rest of the world. The NSO is joined by his granddaughter, dancer/choreographer Mercedes Ellington, whose appearance is made possible by the Duke Ellington Fund.
Chuck Brown, the creator of D.C.'s own Go-Go music, joins the NSO as part of his 75th birthday celebration. The NSO has commissioned two arrangements especially for this salute: Dancin' with Chuck Brown, a medley by Tim Berens of three Chuck Brown favorites: "That'll Work," "Harlem Nocturne," and "Bustin' Loose"; and Run, Joe, arranged by Sam Shoup. Following the orchestral portion of the evening, Chuck Brown and his band continue the performance.
