When little country cricket Chester mistakenly travels by picnic basket to New York City, his music is transformed forever. Chester's pitch-perfect chirps accompany classical sounds to make him a Times Square sensation in this world premiere retelling of George Selden's Newbery Honor book, The Cricket in Times Square, composed and adapted by jazz innovator and genre-bending modern classical composer Chris Brubeck. Join the NSO, Chester Cricket as performed by Nick Kendall on solo violin, and Chester's buddies--Mario, Tucker Mouse, and Harry Cat--portrayed by actors, for a funny, sweet, and magically musical story of a little cricket finding his voice in the big city. Age 5 and up.
Come early for the Musical Instrument "Petting Zoo." An hour before each NSO Family Concert, young concertgoers can get up close and hands-on with the instruments they'll see played on the stage--from violins, trumpets, and oboes to trombones and percussion--in the Kennedy Center Atrium. A project of the Women's Committee for the NSO.
Stay after the 3 p.m. concerts for a Kids' Chat. Following the 3 p.m. concert, young audience members can ask questions and hear engaging stories in an up-close-and-personal talk with the concert artists.
