KEIGWIN + COMPANY DANCES BERNSTEIN

Renowned for its unique and witty choreography, New York City–based KEIGWIN + COMPANY performed to packed houses at the Kennedy Center in 2009 and 2012. Now the company returns with a new work by Larry Keigwin set to Leonard Bernstein's Academy Award–nominated music for the 1954 crime drama On the Waterfront, plus three dance episodes from Bernstein's classic 1940s musical On the Town: "Dance of the Great Lover," "Pas de Deux," and "Times Square Ballet."

SCHUMAN'S NEW ENGLAND TRIPTYCH
A signature example of the Americana style of music from the 1930s to 1950s, William Schuman's 1956 three-part series of tone poems was inspired by hymns from 18th-century American composer William Billings: the spirited and rejoicing "Be Glad Then, America," the lyrical and poignant "When Jesus Wept," and the brassy marching song "Chester." Schuman was the very first winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1943.

SUE HEINEMAN, PRINCIPAL BASSOON, ON NEIKRUG'S BASSOON CONCERTO
"In this concerto, which just enjoyed its premiere in 2013, Neikrug seeks to bring out various properties of the bassoon--its ability to negotiate large leaps in the first movement, lyricism in the second, and the sound of the tremolo or ‘shake' in the third. As with any bassoon concerto, instrumentation of the accompaniment is very important, so that the relatively gentle solo instrument can be heard."
